The Shakespeare Play Reading Group meets on the fourth Thursday of every month at members’ houses. We meet from 2 pm to 4 pm with a break for refreshments.
We are working our way through Shakespeare’s plays in chronological order so to come over the next few months are King Lear, Macbeth and Anthony and Cleopatra.
Each play involves two or three sessions and the parts to be read are divided among the members by lucky dip. Since each play has 17 or more speaking parts, and Macbeth has 37, each person usually gets to read more than one part, sometimes a major part and a lesser part or a number of small parts.
We tend not to discuss the plays in detail; the pleasure is in reading the plays and we don’t take it too seriously.
